Message from the President to all Members, Colleagues, Speakers, Congressmen and Sponsors

Dear colleagues and friends

We will hold the III Congress of our Society in the beautiful month of May, from the 25th to the 27th, in the even more beautiful Ismaili Center in Lisbon.

The Ismaili Center was born on December 18, 1996, and is characterized not only for being a place of prayer for the community, but also for being a meeting point for people from different social and cultural backgrounds, thus promoting the creation of bridges between various communities. A place for sharing knowledge and intellectual development, celebrating values such as pluralism. From here, it is easy to understand the choice of venue for our III congress.

As we can see, the program also translates not only the growth of this society but also the constant concern in promoting research and demonstrating the efficacy and efficiency of the therapeutic methodologies of the various clinical areas of Speech Therapy. The culmination of this theme is well reflected in the launch of the book “Compendium in Speech Therapy: to assess and intervene with evidence” – surely the biggest scientific milestone in the history of Portuguese Speech Therapy.

We have some foreign guests in the presential format, Alexandre Cavallieri Gomes and Victoria Joffe, and in the distance format, Anna Volkmer, Anne Vertigan, Cristina Murphy, Richard Talbot and Sharynne McLeod.

We also have 6 workshops for you on May 25th, which will take place in Saldanha, at Best Office Saldanha. This will be followed by two days with 6 conferences, 4 round tables, free papers, posters, and also a visit to our partners who keep us up to date on materials, training, equipment, among others. It will be a mega congress! We will also have surprises, because after all the language of science also intersects with the language of the affections.

And because SPTF should also tell the History of Speech Therapy and there is no present or future without a past, it is with great honor that we tell you the story of Gabriela Leal, Speech Therapist, Honorary President of this Congress , whose contribution to Speech Therapy and to the training of hundreds of colleagues, is exalted and truly inspiring.

We are counting on you in this III Congress which is also the Congress of reunion after more complicated times experienced by all.

I’m waiting for you!

Paula Correia

Lisbon

Lisbon is a city, a municipality, capital of Portugal and of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It has an urban area of 100.05 km² and 545,796 inhabitants in 2021, being the largest city in the country. Lisbon is the political center of Portugal, seat of the government and residence of the head of state. The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) has its headquarters in the city and is the westernmost capital of the European continent, on the Atlantic coast.

Lisbon is a city with an intense cultural life. Epicenter of the discoveries since the XV, the city is the meeting point of the most diverse cultures, the first place where East, Indies, Africas and Americas met. Maintaining close ties with the former Portuguese colonies and today independent countries, Lisbon is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. It is possible, in a single metro ride, to hear languages such as Cantonese, Cape Verdean Creole, Gujarati, Ukrainian, Italian or Portuguese with a Mozambican or Brazilian accent. And none of them spoken by tourists, but by the city’s inhabitants.

Lisbon is one of the mildest capitals in Europe, with a Mediterranean climate.

Ismaili Center

The III International Congress of the Portuguese Society of Speech Therapy will take place in the beautiful city of Lisbon, at the Ismaili Center.

Opened in July 1996 and built by architects Raj Rewal and Frederico Valsassina, it covers a total area of 18,000 m2, with the built area representing only one third of the total area – 5,500 m2. The remaining area, 12,500 m2, is dedicated to the indoor and outdoor gardens and patios. This area contains 4 main gardens: the Fruit Garden (the largest), the Olive Garden, the Jacaranda Garden, and the Pine Garden. The Courtyards include the Char Bagh and the Spring Courtyard, both located in the social area of the Center. These Gardens include more than 100 different species, and 300 trees, from all over the world, from Spain to North America. The building materials (lioz and granite) and the cupolas were inspired by the Jerónimos Monastery, the latter being specifically inspired by the Church of Santa Maria de Belém located in the Jerónimos Monastery; the gardens, outdoor and indoor patios, cloisters, and specifically the Char Bagh were inspired by the Alhambra Complex in Granada; and, the geometric renderings were inspired by the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri. The tiles presented at the Ismaili Center were inspired by the Arab Room at the Sintra National Palace and hand painted by Fábrica Viúva Lamego. These Mozarabic tiles are one of the main decorative elements of the Center. The Ismaili Center contains several pieces of art, such as Manuel Cargaleiro’s triptych and several traditional tapestries from Central Asia. and, the geometric laces were inspired by the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri.
