Brain plasticity in response to treatment in chronic aphasia
Neste webinar será apresentada uma visão geral dos mecanismos de neuroplasticidade envolvidos na recuperação da afasia em fase crónica. Os participantes receberão uma visão abrangente de diferentes estudos de neuroimagem e neuromodulação que ajudam a compreender os sistemas neuronais que suportam a função da linguagem.
In this webinar an overview of the neuroplasticity mechanisms involved in the recovery from chronic stage aphasia will be presented. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of different neuroimaging and neuromodulation studies that help understand the neuronal systems that support language function.

A Professora Drª Jennifer Crinion é Professora de Neurociências Cognitivas no Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London. Desde 2016, recebe o suporte da Wellcome Senior Clinical Fellowship e é co-lider do Neurotherapeutics Group, desde 2014, na mesma Universidade. É graduada em Terapia da Fala pelo University College London e obteve o doutoramento em Neurociências Cognitivas pelo Imperial College London, em 2005.
O seu programa de investigação clínico é dedicado à compreensão dos mecanismos neuronais na afasia e de como as lesões cerebrais respondem ao tratamento. O seu grupo de investigação utiliza uma abordagem cognitiva-neurocientífica multifacetada (neuroimagem, comportamental e estimulação cerebral não invasiva) para investigar os mecanismos subjacentes à variabilidade na resposta ao tratamento e os fatores que a influenciam. Para além de investigadora, a Professora Jennifer Crinion é também terapeuta da fala consultora no National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals sendo responsável pelo desenvolvimento estratégico de uma clínica especializada no tratamento da afasia que, desde 2019, vem a desenvolver o primeiro programa compreensivo de reabilitação intensiva do NHS (National Health System) para pessoas com afasia em fase crónica. Através de uma maior compreensão dos mecanismos de recuperação, o seu objetivo é desenvolver novas abordagens de tratamento e a possibilidade de prever que tratamento é mais adequado para cada pessoa com afasia, por forma a melhorar a resposta e prognóstico a longo termo.
Jennifer Crinion is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London. From 2016 she is supported by a Wellcome Senior Clinical Fellowship. She joined the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience when awarded an MRC Clinical Scientist Fellowship in 2008 and has been co-lead of the Neurotherapeutics Group since 2014. Jenny first qualified as a speech and language therapist (SLT) from University College London and received a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Imperial College London in 2005.
Her clinical research program is dedicated to understanding the neural mechanisms of aphasia and how lesioned brains respond to different and novel treatment interventions. This requires integration of both research and clinical infrastructures, which as an academic SLT at University College London/Hospitals, UK she is well placed to do so. The translational cognitive neuroscience approach is multi-pronged (neuroimaging, behaviour, non-invasive brain stimulation) investigating the neural mechanisms underlying variability in treatment response and factors that relate to aphasia outcomes. Clinically, she is also a consultant SLT at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals responsible for the delivery and strategic development of a national specialist Aphasia Clinic and since 2019 its first NHS Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Rehabilitation Programme for chronic stroke patients. By understanding the mechanisms of recovery her goal is to develop new treatment approaches and predict which is best for each person living with aphasia, so we can improve outcomes and long-term prognosis.
