A Afasia Progressiva Primária é definida como um defeito de linguagem de início insidioso e progressão gradual, que surge como um sintoma isolado, sem outros defeitos cognitivos. A apresentação clínica é variada e os defeitos de linguagem podem ser de vários tipos. Pretende-se refletir sobre a abordagem da terapia da fala nesta situação clínica desafiante, à luz da evidência científica.
Neste webinar, será apresentada uma visão geral das actuais práticas de terapia da fala na Afasia Progressiva Primária (APP). Os participantes receberão uma visão abrangente das dificuldades linguísticas e de comunicação experienciadas nas variantes não fluentes, semânticas e logopénicas da APP com orientações, baseadas na evidência científica, para avaliação e intervenção. Serão discutidos estudos recentes sobre intervenção na APP. Haverá um foco nos desafios que surgem neste complexo campo de prática clínica.
Primary Progressive Aphasia is defined as a language defect of insidious onset and gradual progression that appears as an isolated symptom without other cognitive defects. The clinical presentation is varied and language defects can be of various types. We intend to reflect on the speech therapy approach in this challenging clinical situation in light of scientific evidence.
In this webinar, I will present an overview of current speech-language practices in Primary Progressive Aphasia. Participants will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the language and communication difficulties experienced in the non-fluent, semantic and logopenic variants of PPA, with evidenced-based, practical guidelines for assessment and intervention. Recent research on effective treatments will be highlighted. There will a focus on the challenges that arise in this complex field of practice.

Terapeuta da fala com experiência em contexto clínico com adultos com alterações adquiridas da comunicação e alterações na deglutição, resultantes de AVC e outras condições neurodegenerativas.
Mestre em Ciência Aplicada pela Universidade de Sydney com um trabalho focado particularmente nas alterações que ocorrem na conversação normal nas Afasias Progressivas Primárias. Continuou a sua investigação com um doutoramento na Universidade Macquarie. Investigou intervenções comportamentais para melhorar e manter a comunicação das pessoas com APP e a respetiva família e cuidadores.
Presta serviços de avaliação, tratamento, educação e apoio a pessoas com APP em New South Wales numa clínica de referenciação para APP e perturbações associadas no Hospital Uniting War Memorial. Esteve presente em fóruns de cuidadores e reuniões científicas, fornece uma educação específica dirigida aos estudantes de licenciatura e mestrado em terapia da fala e tem inúmeras publicações em revistas nacionais e internacionais.
Shortly after graduating as a Speech Pathologist, I was able to follow my fascination with language by practicing in adult neurological services at eminent teaching hospitals in Sydney. I worked clinically with adults with acquired communication and swallowing problems as the result of stroke and neurodegenerative conditions. By 2010, my passion with language and growing caseload of individuals with Primary Progressive Aphasia, lead me to concentrate on clinical practise in this emerging field and to my research in the area. I completed a Master of Applied Science at University of Sydney in 2015, particularly focussing on the nature of conversation breakdown in PPA. I continued in this specialised area of practice and research and in my PhD studies at Macquarie University I investigated effective behavioural treatments for improving and maintaining communication for people with PPA and their families and caregivers.
I provide assessment, treatment, education and support services for people with PPA from across NSW due to the establishment of a tertiary referral clinic for PPA and Related Disorders at Uniting War Memorial Hospital Waverley. I also conduct a specialist private practice for individuals with PPA and language-led dementia syndromes. I have presented at caregiver forums and scientific meetings and provide specific targeted education to undergraduate and masters entry speech pathology students. I have published in national and international peer reviewed journals.
I am a Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist (CPSP), Practicing Member of Speech Pathology Australia (MSPA), a Clinical Affiliate of the Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Aphasia (www.ccreaphasia.org.au), and a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney.
