Navigating Cognitive and Communication Challenges in Global Aphasia
Neste webinar, a Dra Sharon irá apresentar uma visão geral da evidência científica atual sobre afasia global e partilhará os resultados da sua própria investigação, que testou e avaliou uma intervenção cognitiva não linguística inovadora dirigida a esta população. Com base em exemplos clínicos, a Dra Sharon irá oferecer estratégias práticas para a avaliação e intervenção junto deste grupo complexo. O webinar abordará ainda as principais lacunas no conhecimento atual e destacará prioridades para investigação futura.
In this webinar, Sharon will provide an overview of the current evidence base in global aphasia and share findings from her own research, which trialled and evaluated a novel non-linguistic cognitive intervention for this population. Drawing on clinical case examples, she will offer practical strategies for assessment and intervention with this complex client group. The session will also consider the key gaps in current knowledge and highlight priorities for future research.

Dr Sharon Adjei-Nicol
A Dra Sharon Adjel-Nicol, formou-se em Terapia da Fala em 2004 e, deste então,tem exercido profissionalmente em múltiplos contextos clínicos, públicos e privados no Reino Unido, na área dos adultos com perturbações da comunicação, deglutição e voz. Atualmente, divide o seu tempo entre a sua prática privada, Acquired Speech and LanguageTherapy e a Canterbury Christ Church University (Kent, UK), onde é Senior Lecturer no Departamento de Terapia da Fala.
A Dra Sharon Adjel-Nicol recebeu o Grau de Doutoramento em 2020, pela UniversityCollege London, onde desenvolveu investigação na área da Afasia Global. Tem vindo a apresentar o seu trabalho de investigação nacional e internacionalmente, incluindo participações no UK Stroke Forum, na British Aphasiology Society’s InternationalConference and Therapy Symposium, ou na Danish Association of Speech and LanguagePathologists. É a autora do livro Working with Global Aphasia: Theory & Practice e o seu artigo científico mais recente foi publicado na International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders: https://doi.org/10.1111/1460-6984.13155
Dr Sharon Adjei-Nicol qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2004. Since then, she has worked across a range of public and independent settings in the UK, supporting adults with acquired communication, swallowing, and voice disorders. She currently divides her time between her independent practice, Acquire Speech & Language Therapy, and her role as Senior Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy at Canterbury Christ Church University, Kent, UK.
Sharon was awarded her PhD in 2020 from University College London (UCL), where she conducted research into global aphasia. She has presented her work both nationally and internationally, including at the UK Stroke Forum, the British Aphasiology Society’s International Conference and Therapy Symposium, and the Danish Association of Speech and Language Pathologists. She is the author of the book Working with Global Aphasia: Theory & Practice and recently published an article in the International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders: https://doi.org/10.1111/1460-6984.13155
